Every string rings at once

A monochord is played by sweeping the fingers across all of its strings, so the whole box has to resonate. That puts the work into the soundboard, the frame that holds the tension, and the small parts that keep it in tune.

Built to order. If you play, teach, or work with sound, tell me what you have in mind and we can talk through size, tuning, and wood.

Tables and benches from single slabs

Each top is one board, with the tree’s natural edge kept along one side. Bases range from tapered wood legs to steel hairpin and trapezoid frames.

Tealight holders

Solid blocks of walnut and purpleheart, each laminated with a stripe of a contrasting wood. They make good gifts.

About

One shop, one maker

I’m Jeremy Dalnes. Corkhill Workshop is my shop in Newton, named for Cork Hill, the neighborhood where my family lives.

I build every piece myself, start to finish: choosing the boards, milling, joinery, finishing, and for instruments, stringing and tuning.

Commissions

How a commission works

  1. Tell me what you have in mind

The piece, where it will live, and when you’d like it.

  2. Settle the design and the wood

We agree on dimensions, species, and price before I start.

  3. I build it

Start to finish, in my shop in Newton.

  4. Delivery or shipping

We arrange how it gets to you once it’s finished.
